SKINR

“The Super-Kerr Induced Nanocoating Resequencer, or SKINR for ships empowers you to fly your true colors, express your unique identity, and unleash your creativity through the design and sequencing of personalized, custom ship SKINs.”

At Fenris Creations (formerly CCP), I was tasked with creating a user interface for SKINR, where EVE Online players would be able to reskin their ships by applying and blending colours and patterns.

On a long-term project like EVE, there is a natural tendence to want to remake what’s already there, and often with good reason. However, there needs to be a cohesion and a visually common thread. With a design system in place, this becomes much easier. Even so, SKINR was a snowflake design, as it required bespoke solutions for a new type of approach to gameplay.

From sketch to first iteration, all ideas are good ideas. Even the bad ones. It’s absolutely vital to be willing to look like a madman at this stage.

Not necessarily higher fidelity, but through iterations, things are starting to fall into place.

Skins require an ecosystem of their own. We created the Paragon Hub to encompass all that was needed with futureproofing in mind.
